In the spirit of Baltimore’s own Henrietta Lacks, the University of Maryland Medical Center; University of Maryland, Baltimore; and other community partners will host a second, biennial symposium to explore the medical and legal issues surrounding scientific research, patient consent and racial health disparities.

These issues gained national attention following the publication of the story of Henrietta Lacks, a Baltimore woman who died of cervical cancer in the 1950s, but whose cancer cells, taken without her or her family’s knowledge, have been used for scientific research for decades. The so-called HeLa cell line has played a pivotal role in scientific 

 

We are planning to hold the Symposium on Thursday, March 7 BEGINNING AT A LATER TIME.  In anticipation of the expected snow storm and potential travel difficulties, we will begin registration at 9:00 a.m.  The program will begin at 9:30 a.m. and will conclude by 1:00 p.m.  We look forward to seeing you.

 

If the University of Maryland Baltimore campus closes, the event will be canceled.
If the campus opens later than 9:00, please check your e-mail for details on start time.
